Thank you for your interest in this project. This document outlines why we are doing this study and tells you your involvement and rights as a participant. About Internet Matters

Internet Matters is a UK-based not-for-profit that provides guidance and resources for parents and professionals to help keep children safe online. We are one of the most popular information sources among parents, providing advice to over 9 million parents last year. We conduct regular research and use our insights to champion the views and interests of families, making evidence-based recommendations to all those with influence over children’s digital lives. This includes our industry partners, as well as the government, policymakers and parliamentarians.

What is the research about and what will it be used for?

We are conducting research with children and young people aged 13-17 about news and how it affects their wellbeing. This includes how young people consume news and the benefits and drawbacks of using social media to see news, exposure to fake news and misinformation, and any strategies to look after their wellbeing when they come across upsetting news. The findings from this research will be used in an upcoming report on the topic which we will publish in October 2025.

What do I have to do?

You will be asked to take part in a focus group with 7 other children your age (13-17) that will take place on Zoom. It should take about 1 hour of your time. Don’t worry, you don’t need any prior knowledge beforehand and the focus group will be a conversation about you, your experiences and thoughts!

Do I have to take part?

Participation is entirely voluntary and there are no negative consequences if you decide you don’t want to take part in this. If there are any specific questions you don’t want to answer, you can tell us, and we can move on. As a thank you, after taking part in the focus group you will receive £30 via PayPal.

Will my information be confidential? Will it be anonymous?

All your personal information will be anonymised, and your name will not be used in any of the materials produced from this focus group. We will record the focus group, but all records will be kept confidential and are only accessible to the project team at Internet Matters.

If you agree to take part in this research, please complete the section below:
