What is this research about?

We (IFF Research) are doing a research study to find out how smartphones affect children. A smartphone is a type of mobile phone which connects to the internet and you can download apps on to.

We want to hear from children like you about:

What you think about smartphones
What it is like to use a smartphone, have one, or not have one

We are doing this research for the Department for Education. It will help them give advice to families and schools about children and smartphones.

What will I do if I take part?

If you take part, you will join a fun online activity session with other children around your age. The session will be after school or on the weekend and will last about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

In the session, you will get to do things like:

Share your ideas about having, using, or not having a smartphone
Drawing or playing games
Telling stories
Listening to other children’s ideas

What if I need a break?

You can take a break whenever you like, or stop taking part at any time.

How will my information be used?

We will use your ideas when we write about the research. Your ideas will help adults make better plans about smartphones for children.

We will keep information about you, like your name and age, safe. We will delete it 12 months after the study ends. You can ask us to change or delete it at any time.

You can stop taking part at any time. You can also ask us to delete what you told us until 25th September when the things you have said will be anonymised. This means we will mix the things you and other children tell us together so that no one can tell who said what.

We will audio and video record the session. We will stop recording if you ask us to, or if we notice you do not want to carry on. We will keep the recordings safe and use them only for the research.

When we write about our research, we will put everyone’s answers together. We will not use your name and no one will know the answers came from you. Nobody outside of the research team will know that you took part.
