Consent Form and Information Sheet for Young People

Who are we?

Ipsos UK is an independent research organisation conducting this research for the UK Government.

What is the research about?

We want to understand more about your experiences of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and/or knife crime where you live, what you think might help reduce ASB and knife crime, and what you think about the government’s approach to tackling these issues (you will be told more about their approach during the discussion group).

Why was I selected to take part?

You’ve been asked to take part because you are a young person aged 16 or 17 years old and live in or near an area where the government is conducting patrols to tackle ASB and/or knife crime.

What will I have to do?

If you take part, you will join an online group discussion with other people from the same area who are also 16 or 17. The discussion will be led by a researcher from Ipsos and will last up to an hour and a half. We will ask you questions about your area, about ASB and knife crime in your area, and what you think might help tackle these issues. If you would like a trusted adult to be in the room while you take part, that is fine, please just let us know.

Do I have to take part?

No, it is entirely up to you. If you do not want to take part, please just let us know.

Are there any benefits to me taking part

By taking part you will be helping with important research that will be used by the government to review its approach to tackle ASB and knife crime. You will also a receive a £40 voucher as a thank you for your time.

Are there any risks to me taking part?

ASB and knife crime can be difficult topics to talk about, which you might find upsetting. If there are any questions you prefer not to answer or topics you prefer not to talk about that’s fine, you can choose not to answer any questions you don’t want to, but other participants may want to answer these questions, or if you prefer you can leave the group at any time.

The focus group is anonymous. Apart from the other people in the group, no-one will know which answers are yours and we will not pass your name or any other personal information to the government. However, if you tell us about something that is putting you or someone close to you at risk of serious harm or in danger, we may need to tell someone so that we can make sure you are safe. If that happens, we will tell you so we can decide how to do that together.

Who will know what I’ve said?

All the information we have collected will be made anonymous and will be kept securely. This means we will not use your name or any personal information, and only the researchers at Ipsos UK, and the other participants in your group, will know your individual responses. Our report to the government will give a summary of findings and we may quote what you say in the group, but any quotes we use will be anonymous.

What if I change my mind?

You can decide later that you no longer want to take part in the group discussion, and even after you have taken part you can ask us to remove your personal data and information. You do not need to give a reason or explain your decision. If you wish to withdraw your answers from the study you can do this until we combine all the answers. This would usually be two weeks after you take part in the focus group. You can ask us to remove all personal information that we hold separately for up to three months after the study has finished (which we estimate to be October 2025), after which time all personal information will be deleted.

How can I contact Ipsos about this research?
