Information for volunteers attending a test Our Future Health appointment

About Our Future Health

Our Future Health aims to be the UK's largest-ever health research programme. It is designed to help people live healthier lives for longer through the discovery and testing of more effective approaches to prevention, earlierdetection and treatment of diseases.

We are aiming to collect information and samples from up to 5 million adults to build the most detailed picture ever of the UK's health. Researchers will be able to apply to use this information to make new discoveries about health and disease.

About your test appointment

Taking part in Our Future Health involves attending an appointment where two venepuncture blood draws will be conducted and some physical health measurements are taken.

You will have been invited to take part in your Our Future Health test appointment, we call this a 'wet run'. By taking part in a test appointment or wet run, you are not a real participant for the Our Future Health research programme. Our Future Health are running test appointments because they would like to check the process of the appointment from start to finish.

Our Future Health have developed the appointment with a large team including the community pharmacy we are partnering with, medical experts, experts in research appointments and many others who have helped to make the experience easy and pleasant.

The test appointment will be with a member of staff who is newly trained in how to take a blood sample from the community pharmacy.

The appointment testing includes checking that consent is in place, taking some physical measurements from you, and having blood taken. Any data and samples generated as part of the test appointment will not be used for any purpose other than for testing the appointment process. Anything collected will be destroyed at the end of the appointment testing process.

Your test appointment should last between 20-30 minutes.

At the test appointment, you may have the following measurements taken and logged against a fictitious profile:

2 blood pressure measurements
Heart rate readings
Height measurement
Weight measurement
Waist circumference measurement
A finger prick cholesterol test
Two venepuncture blood draws (2 blood draws each collecting a 6ml sample)

How to prepare for your test appointment

Before you attend your test appointment, you must read the consent form in this document and provide consent in writing, as requested by the recruitment agency.

Before attending, please check the list below for symptoms you may have experienced in the last 48 hours:

Cough
Fever
Loss or change in taste or smell
Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
New symptoms that you intend to see a health care professional about, but haven't yet
Tested positive for COVID-19 in the last seven days

If you have felt unwell in the last 48 hours with anything on this list, unfortunately, you will not be able to attend your upcoming test appointment. Please let the person who is organising your appointment know as soon as possible if this is the case.

Please wear loose-fitting clothing to make checking your blood pressure and taking a blood sample easier.

There is no need to fast before attending your appointment, please eat as normal and ensure you are well hydrated to increase the likelihood of a successful blood draw.

Where to go for your test appointment

You will have been given a full address for your test appointment. Please arrive roughly 5-10 minutes before your appointment time.

To find your appointment go to the pharmacy area near the private consultation rooms and inform someone that you are there for the Our Future Health test appointment.

Please complete this form if you would like to volunteer in the Our Future Health Boots Pilot test appointment.

A test appointment is a test of a process from start to finish. In this case, it is a test of the appointment at Boots, including checking that consent is in place, taking some physical measurements, and having blood taken.

Any data or samples that are generated as part of the test appointment are not used for any purposes except for the test. Anything that is collected will be destroyed at the end of the test appointment.

arrange my appointment or in the event of an incident. and I will be assigned a fictitious profile
I may have the following measurements taken and logged against a fictitious profile on the Clinical Staff App:
- Blood pressure readings
- Heart rate readings
- Height measurement
- Weight measurement
- Waist circumference measurement
- POC cholesterol test readings
- My blood sample will be taken by a member of Boots staff for training purposes
- When the test appointment process has been completed, my samples and any data collected from me
- (e.g. my measurements) will be destroyed
