Consent Form - Don't Lose the Music


Introduction

Thank you for your interest in this research. Please read the following information carefully to help you decide whether you wish to take part.

  • Purpose of the Research: This research is being conducted by RNID. The purpose of this study is to gather feedback on materials included within a campaign to raise awareness and provide tools to encourage people to understand and mitigate their risk of noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus. 
  • What You Need to Know: This form will explain what the research involves, how your data will be used, and your rights as a participant.
  • Accessibility Needs: We are committed to making this research accessible. If you have any specific needs that we are not already aware of please let us know, and we will make the necessary arrangements. Please discuss any needs with the recruitment agency who will pass this information on to RNID.

Who is RNID?

RNID is the national charity supporting the 18 million people in the UK who are deaf, have hearing loss, or tinnitus. We work to end the discrimination faced by our communities, help people hear better now, and fund world-class research to restore hearing and silence tinnitus. What does taking part involve?

Focus Groups
The three focus groups will last approximately 90 minutes each, and discussions will focus on perceptions and current behaviours around of hearing loss and hearing protection at live music events, and feedback on materials related to this campaign. You will have full control over what information you choose to share.

To thank you for your time, you will receive a £35 eGift voucher for each session completed.  

An observer may be present during the focus groups to take notes, and they will be bound by the same confidentiality agreements as the researchers. The focus groups will be video recorded, and these recordings will be used for analysis by the project team and may also be shared with relevant stakeholders as necessary. Access will be limited to the project team and authorised personnel only, and they will be deleted once the project is completed. Anonymised transcripts of the focus groups will then be stored on our encrypted SharePoint environment for 10 years before being safely deleted. Trigger Warnings and Safeguarding

  • Trigger Warnings: The focus groups will contain content and questions about attitudes towards hearing protection and hearing loss and any current behaviours taken (or not) to mitigate this. If you feel uncomfortable at any point, you may choose not to answer specific questions or stop participating entirely.
  • Safeguarding Concerns: If, during this research, you disclose any information that suggests you or someone else is at risk of harm or disclose an allegation of abuse, we may be required to pass this information on to the relevant authorities. We will always seek to ask for your consent and keep you informed as far as reasonably possible in line with RNIDs Safeguarding Policy.

Data Collection and Use

  • How Your Data Will Be Collected: We will collect data through recorded online interviews using Microsoft Teams. During data collection, your identity will be known to the researcher(s). However, once collected, your data will be anonymised for analysis and reporting purposes, except in the case of video recordings, where your identity will remain associated with the recordings for the purposes of analysis and may be shared with clients or relevant stakeholders as necessary.
  • How Your Data Will Be Used: Your data will be used to improve our understanding of attitudes towards hearing loss and hearing protection and current behaviours around live music events. It will also help us to improve materials created for this campaign. Anonymised quotes may be included in reports, but these will be selected to ensure they do not identify you.
  • Data Storage

Participant Rights

  • Voluntary Participation: Your participation is entirely voluntary. You control what information you choose to share. You may choose not to answer any question or to stop participating at any time.
  • Can I Change My Mind: You have the right to withdraw your consent and ask for your data to be deleted at any point before 17 August 2026. Please contact us at [email protected] to do so.

Risks and Benefits

  • Risks: There are no known risks associated with this research.
  • Benefits: £35 eGift voucher for each completed session. Your participation will contribute to improving our campaign materials and our understanding of current behaviours and understanding of hearing loss and hearing protection.
