UKTV focus groups privacy notice

To help us improve our products and services and learn about our audiences, UKTV Media Limited (04266373) (“UKTV”) is working with Roots Research Limited (06659150) (“Roots Research”) to carry out and administer market research on our behalf. UKTV is the “data controller” of your personal data.

What information we collect

When you sign up to take part and participate in the focus groups, Roots Research will collect and process the following information:

Name and contact details including email address
Birthdate
Demographic information
Any information you provide in the course of participating in the focus groups, eg your likes, preferences and opinions (which we collect via video recordings of and notes taken during the focus group discussion)

This may include the collection of sensitive personal information such as your ethnicity, disability, and sexuality (‘special category data’), which helps us to ensure that the project is representative. Providing sensitive personal information is always voluntary, and you may withdraw your consent at any time by emailing us at [email protected].

Our lawful basis for processing your personal data is UKTV’s legitimate interest in researching the likes, preferences and opinions of our audience and users in order to improve our products and services.

Where we process special category data about you, we do so with your explicit consent.

How we use your information

We will use your details and output from the focus groups for the purposes of carrying out research and understanding our audiences. It’s up to you whether or not you answer each question in the discussion – but we really hope you will be happy to share your likes, preferences and opinions so we can consider them as part of our research.

We will share your information with:

members of the UKTV Research Team, but also other UKTV teams (like the Commissioning and Creative Teams so we can better tailor our productions and adverts);
third parties who provide services to UKTV in connection with the research activities in which you have participated; and
our contracted third parties who provide business services to us, such as IT platforms.

We will not otherwise share your personal information unless required by law.

Identifiable records (such as your name and contact details) will be deleted at the conclusion of your participation in the focus group. We will retain your focus group answers for as long as we reasonably believe it necessary to fulfil our research purposes or comply with applicable law, audit requirements, regulatory requests or orders from competent courts. We will then securely delete it.

Your rights and more information

Data protection law gives you certain rights in relation to your personal data, including the right to request access to and rectification or erasure of your personal data or restriction of its processing, and to object to processing.
